The primary difference is that therapy focuses on mental health treatment while coaching focuses on setting and achieving goals.
Therapy is for those who:
— Have mental health symptoms that cause distress in their lives such as anxiety, trauma, panic, depression, or disordered eating.
— Want to heal from past hurts or trauma.
— Are experiencing marriage issues that would benefit from couples counseling.
—Experience impairment in one or more areas of their lives (familial, social, academic, occupational)
Coaching is for those who:
— Do NOT have mental health symptoms interfering with their daily lives.
— Want to get “unstuck” and set meaningful goals to become their best selves.
— Desire a life with purpose and meaning, but do not know where to start.
— Feel like something is missing and need that extra inspiration to piece their puzzle together.
— Are looking for support, education, and accountability.

Coaching and therapy are both valuable approaches that aim to support individuals in achieving personal growth, but they differ in their focus and methods. Understanding the distinction between coaching and therapy can help you determine which approach is best suited to your needs.
Therapy, also known as psychotherapy or counseling, primarily focuses on addressing and resolving psychological issues, emotional distress, and mental health concerns. Therapists are trained professionals who help individuals explore and understand the underlying causes of their difficulties, heal emotional wounds, and develop coping strategies. Therapy often involves delving into past experiences and traumas to gain insight and facilitate healing.
Coaching, on the other hand, is a goal-oriented and future-focused approach that helps individuals identify and achieve their desired outcomes. Coaches work with clients to clarify their goals, develop action plans, and provide support and accountability throughout the process. Coaching is typically utilized by individuals who are looking to enhance their personal or professional lives, improve specific skills, or navigate transitions.
While therapy primarily focuses on addressing past trauma, emotional healing, and mental health concerns, coaching is more focused on personal development, goal achievement, and creating positive change in the present and future. Therapy tends to be more introspective and therapeutic, while coaching is action-oriented and results-driven.
It's important to note that coaching is not a substitute for therapy, and vice versa. If you're experiencing significant emotional distress, struggling with mental health issues, or dealing with unresolved trauma, therapy may be a more appropriate avenue to address those concerns. On the other hand, if you're seeking guidance, support, and motivation to achieve specific goals or make positive changes in your life, coaching can be a valuable resource.
Ultimately, the choice between coaching and therapy depends on your individual needs, goals, and the specific challenges you're facing. Consulting with a professional in each field can help you determine which approach aligns best with your unique circumstances.
